FAQ

Q: What services do you offer at your dental office?

A: At The Smile Zone, we provide a comprehensive range of dental services to meet the needs of your entire family. Our offerings include routine cleanings and exams, cosmetic dentistry, restoration of dental implants, root canals, emergency dental services, and more.

Q: What should I expect during my first visit?

A: Your initial visit to our office will typically consist of a comprehensive assessment, which includes a dental prophylaxis (cleaning), necessary x-rays, and a thorough examination. This allows our team to get a complete picture of your oral health and discuss any necessary treatments. Our staff will work with you to schedule all future appointments at times that are convenient for you.

Q: What are dental implants?

A: Dental implants are synthetic structures that replace the root of a missing tooth. They are anchored into the jawbone to provide a stable foundation for an artificial tooth, crown, or bridge. Made from biocompatible materials like titanium, dental implants are designed to look and function like your natural teeth, offering a durable and long-term solution for tooth replacement.

Q: Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

A: Individuals with healthy gums and sufficient jawbone density are typically good candidates for dental implants. Our dentists can refer you to a trusted local specialist for a more detailed evaluation and placement of the implant(s).  After healing, you would then return to The Smile Zone for the final restorations.

Q: How long do dental implants last?

A: With proper care and regular dental check-ups, dental implants can last for decades. Their longevity depends on factors such as oral hygiene, lifestyle habits, and overall health.

Q: What is root canal therapy?

A: Root canals are a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. The procedure involves removing the damaged or diseased nerve and pulp tissue from the center of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the inner chambers, and then filling and sealing it. This treatment stops the spread of infection and saves the natural tooth from extraction.

Q: How do I know if I need a root canal?

A: You may need a root canal if you experience symptoms such as severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, swelling or tenderness in the gums surrounding the tooth, or discoloration of the affected tooth. We will perform an exam and may take X-rays to confirm whether root canal therapy is necessary.

Q: Is a root canal painful?

A: With advancements in modern dentistry, root canal therapy is no longer the painful procedure it was once thought to be. Dentists use local anesthesia to numb the area, ensuring that you remain comfortable throughout the treatment. After the procedure, some mild discomfort or sensitivity may occur, but it is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Q: How long does the root canal procedure take?

A: The duration of a root canal procedure typically depends on the complexity of the case. Most treatments can be completed in one to two visits, with each appointment lasting around 60 to 90 minutes. Complex cases, such as teeth with multiple canals or infections, may require additional time or visits, or may even require referral to a root canal specialist.

Q: What happens after the root canal is completed?

A: After a root canal, the treated tooth will be topped with either a temporary or a permanent filling. We may recommend placing a crown on the tooth for added protection and to restore its function. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are essential to maintaining the health of the restored tooth and preventing future complications.

Q: What is sedation dentistry?

A: Sedation dentistry utilizes medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It is an ideal option for individuals who experience dental anxiety or fear. We offer different levels of sedation to ensure that you are comfortable and at ease throughout your treatment, allowing you to receive the care you need without stress. Our approach to gentle dentistry makes your comfort a priority.

Q: Is sedation dentistry safe?

A: Yes, sedation dentistry is generally safe when administered by a qualified dental professional. We closely monitor patients throughout the procedure to ensure their safety and comfort.

Q: What types of sedation are available?

A: We offer several types of sedation, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation. Each option varies in strength and is tailored to the level of relaxation you require during your dental procedure.

Q: How long does the sedation effect last?

A: The duration of sedation effects depends on the type of sedation administered. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, allowing most patients to drive themselves home shortly after their procedure. Oral or IV sedation may have longer recovery times, and you may need someone to assist you afterward. We will provide specific post-procedure instructions based on your sedation type.

Q: How does teeth whitening work?

A: For established patients at The Smile Zone, our doctors will evaluate if you are a good candidate for whitening and the appropriate whitening regimen for your individual case.  The whitening gel is applied to custom made whitening trays and worn for a designated amount of time where the bleach factors of the gel diffuse thoroughly into the microstructure of the teeth.

Q: Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?

A: Established patients with no active oral disease, minimal gum recession and minimal tooth sensitivity may be good candidates for teeth whitening procedures.

Q: How long does teeth whitening last?

A: The duration of whitening results depends on a number of factors including the individual’s oral hygiene and dietary/lifestyle habits.  Our team will provide you with the information and whitening gel needed to continue to whiten your teeth from the convenience of your home with custom made whitening trays.  Most patients choose to ‘touch up’ their whitening every 6 months after having their teeth professionally cleaned at our office, but the whitening can be used more or less often, if desired.

Q: Do you accept dental insurance?

A: Yes, our dental office accepts assignment from most dental insurance companies. We will work with you to understand your benefits and help file claims on your behalf. It is important to remember that dental insurance may not cover the full cost of treatment. Patients are responsible for any fees not covered by their insurance. We ask that you familiarize yourself with your coverage limits.
